Joseph's father was Joseph Allen and his mother was Agnes Gregson. His paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Crank. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Richard, Thomas, John, Albert, Sydney, Martha, Mary, Agnes and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the ten children.
