John's father was Joseph Allen and his mother was Agnes Gregson. His paternal grandparents were John Allen and Ellen Crank. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, Richard, Thomas, Albert, Sydney, Martha, Mary, Agnes and Elizabeth. He was the eighth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 2 in May 1899 in Bolton. His burial was in May 1899 at the Heaton Cemetery.²¹
