Edward Stewart's father was Peter Theodore Nicholson and his mother was Elizabeth Beath. His paternal grandparents were John Nicholson and Janet McRostie; his maternal grandparents were James Beath and Christian Low. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James Beath, David, Alexander Reid, Christina Low, Janet (Nettie) and Elisabeth Beath. He was the third youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named John. He died at 11 months old on May 17th, 1871 in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
