Alexander Reid's father was Peter Theodore Nicholson and his mother was Elizabeth Beath. His paternal grandparents were John Nicholson and Janet McRostie; his maternal grandparents were James Beath and Christian Low. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James Beath, David, Edward Stewart, Christina Low, Janet (Nettie) and Elisabeth Beath. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother named John. He died at the age of 2 on May 25th, 1871 in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland.
