Joseph Ernest was born on August 1st, 1886 in Screven Co., GA.1 Joseph Ernest's father was James J. Downing and his mother was Evalina Evans. His maternal grandparents were John Ruel Evans and Sarah Elizabeth Lucas. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John Willie, Mell, Mark, Ernest E., Eva Jane and Agnes M.. He was the second youngest of the seven children. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Robert L., Carl C., Uhlma and Lucille.
