William was born on October 27th, 1763 in "Blandfield," Essex County, Virginia.  William's father was Robert Beverly and his mother was Marie Byrd Carter. He had eight brothers and seven sisters, named Robert Carter Jr, Robert III, Burton, Carter Sr, Byrd, James Miles, Peter Randolph, McKenzie, Maria, Lucy, Anna Munford, Munford, Evelyn Byrd, Jane Bradshaw and Harriet.  He was the oldest of the sixteen children.
