Munford was born on March 4th, 1779 in "Blandfield," Essex County, Virginia.  Munford's father was Robert Beverly and her mother was Marie Byrd Carter. She had nine brothers and six sisters, named William, Robert Carter Jr, Robert III, Burton, Carter Sr, Byrd, James Miles, Peter Randolph, McKenzie, Maria, Lucy, Anna Munford, Evelyn Byrd, Jane Bradshaw and Harriet.  She was the sixth youngest of the sixteen children.
