Byrd was born on August 6th, 1775 in "Blandfield," Essex County, Virginia.  Byrd's father was Robert Beverly and his mother was Marie Byrd Carter. He had eight brothers and seven sisters, named William, Robert Carter Jr, Robert III, Burton, Carter Sr, James Miles, Peter Randolph, McKenzie, Maria, Lucy, Anna Munford, Munford, Evelyn Byrd, Jane Bradshaw and Harriet.  He was the eighth oldest of the sixteen children.
