Stephen was born about 1799 in Guilford, NC. Stephen's father was John Cook and his mother is Lydia Hussey. His paternal grandparents were Abraham Cook and Phebe Mills; his maternal grandparents are John Hussey and Mary Jessop. He had four brothers and a sister, named Jesse, Levi, Henry, Nathan and Mary.
