His paternal grandparents were Emperor Charlemagne of the Holy Roman Empire and Hildegarde of Vinzgau; his maternal grandfather is Ingram of Hasbave. He had a brother and four sisters, named Lothair, Rotrud, Hildegard, Gisela and Adelheid. He had a half-brother named "the Bald". He died on August 28th, 0876 in Francfort, Deu.
