His paternal grandparents were William Stronghand d'Aubigny Earl of Arundel, Lincoln and Sussex and Adeliza De Brabant [Queen 0f England]; his maternal grandparents were James Sidonis de St. Hilary Lord and Aveline de St. Hilary. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Hugh II, Alan, Godfrey, Cecily, Avice Agnes de Arundel and Joan. He had five half-brothers and eight half-sisters, named Richard "Strongbow" 4th Earl, Richard (Sir) 6th Earl, James de, Roger de, Henry de, Mabel de, Maud Matilda de, Joane de, Elena de, Aveline de, Aveline, Eveline (Aveline) de ' and Mabel. Married Mabel, daughter of the Earl of Chester, and stood as close to King John as his grandfather had to Henry II. He was with the King at Runnymede, and surviving from the wars that followed there is a royal writ, dated at Colchester on 24 Marcy 1216, ordering the sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk to make timber available to the constable of Rising 'to fortify the castle of the
Earl of Arundel.' The earl went over to the rebel cause in the June of that same year, but returned to the allegiance of the boy King Henry III in July 1217. Thereafter he went on crusade and was present at the fall of Damietta in 1219, but died on his way home, near Rome in 1221. [Castle Rising, p. 15]

Originally one of King John of England's favourites, he joined the baronial party opposing the king in 1216 after the sealing of Magna Carta. According to the Barnwell annalist, when the barons met in London (1216) to plan the division of England between them, they assigned to d'Albini the government of Lincolnshire. In 1217 he switched his support back to the young Henry III but the next year went on crusade; he died on his travels. [Hallam. The Plantagenet Encyclopedia, p. 16]
