His paternal grandparents were , Duke of Aquitaine William VIII and Hildegarde Princess France Countess Burgandy Princess; his maternal grandparents were Count Of Toulouse Ct.of Toulouse William IV and Emma de Mortainge. William X of Aquitaine (1099 </wiki/1099> – April 9 </wiki/April_9>, 1137 </wiki/1137>), nicknamed the Saint was Duke of Aquitaine </wiki/Duke_of_Aquitaine> and Gascony </wiki/Gascony> and Count of Poitiers </wiki/Count_of_Poitiers> between 1126 </wiki/1126> and 1137.
William was born in Toulouse </wiki/Toulouse>. He was the son of William, the Troubador </wiki/William_IX_of_Aquitaine> by his repudiated wife, Philippa of Toulouse. His younger brother was Raymond of Poitiers </wiki/Raymond_of_Antioch>, ruler of the principality of Antioch </wiki/Principality_of_Antioch>, a crusader state </wiki/Crusader_state>. He married (Aenor) Eleanor of Châtellerault, daughter of his father's mistress, in 1121 </wiki/1121> and from her had three children: William Aigret, who died young; the heiress Eleanor of Aquitaine </wiki/Eleanor_of_Aquitaine>; and Petronilla, who married Raoul, the count of Valentinois </w/wiki.phtml?title=Valentinois&action=edit>.
As his father before him, William X was a patron of troubadors </wiki/Troubador>, music </wiki/Music> and literature </wiki/Literature>. He was an educated man and strived to give his two daughters an excellent education, in a time when Europe </wiki/Europe>'s rulers where hardly literate. When Eleanor succeeded him as Duchess, she continued William's tradition and transformed the Aquitanian court in of Europe's centre of knowledge.
Despite his love of the arts, William was not a peaceful man, and was frequently involved in conflicts with the neighbouring Normandy </wiki/Normandy> (which he raided in 1136 </wiki/1136>) and France </wiki/France>. Even inside his borders, William faced an alliance of the Lusignans and the Parthenays against him, an issue resolved with total destruction of the enemies. In international politics, William X initially supported antipope </wiki/Antipope> Anacletus II </wiki/Antipope_Anacletus_II> in the schism </wiki/Schism> of 1130 </wiki/1130>, opposite to Pope Innocent II </wiki/Pope_Innocent_II>, against the will of his own bishops. In 1134 </wiki/1134> Saint Bernard of Clairvaux </wiki/Bernard_of_Clairvaux> convinced William to drop his support to Anacletus and join Innocent.
In 1137 William joined the pilgrimage </wiki/Pilgrimage> to Santiago de Compostela </wiki/Santiago_de_Compostela>, but died of food poisoning </wiki/Food_poisoning> during the trip. On his deathbed, he expressed his wish to see king Louis VII of France </wiki/Louis_VII_of_France> as protector of his fifteen year old daughter Eleanor. Louis VII accepted this wish and married the heiress of Aquitaine.
