Sarah J. was born on September 28th, 1859 in West Virginia.¹ Sarah J.'s father was WILLIAM French Steele and her mother was RHODA Meadows. Her paternal grandparents were WILLIAM Henderson French and SARAH STEELE; her maternal grandfather was JORDAN Meadows and her maternal grandmother is SUSAN THOMAS. She had four brothers and nine sisters, named Augustus Lincoln, William Sherman, Francis Marion, Martin Luther, MARY Susan, Rebecca Marinda French, Laura F., Olivia, Flora Mae, Ester Garfield, Harriet, Mary L. and Lizzie. She was the oldest of the fourteen children.¹
