Matthew came to Giles County in 1775 and settled on Wolf Creek. Both Matthew and Sallie are buried in the Boyd (French) Cemetery six miles from Narrows on the "old" road, Route #61. Matthew and his eldest son John, were patriotic defenders of American Independence serving in Col. William Preston's Montgomery County Militia Battalion under Maj. Joseph Cloyd & Capt. Thomas Shannon. he and his son John, served in the same company.
A Revolutionary War Memorial marker was erected on Wolf Creek in early 1930. A wagon road established from Capt. Pearis' down New River to the mouth of Wolf Creek and up same ten miles. Matthew French was a surveyor. On February 11, 1807 the Court dismissed the charge against Hiram Tracy for feloniously stealing apples and cider from the property of Matthew French In his will of 6/23/1812 he left his Negro woman Fanny and child Nancy to beloved Sarah.
