(Notes by BLR: 1. These records from a Lea Bible are in SCRUGGS GENEALOGY by Ethel Hastings Scruggs-Dunklin, p. 208-9, a copy of which is in the Virginia State Library, Richmond VA. The material appears in SCRUGGS GENEALOGY because the first wife of William Alanson Dunklin (1810-1888) was
Mary Eliza Rogers, daughter of Polly Miles by her husband, Timothy Rogers. 2. We note that this Lea Bible record shows George Lea to be the grandfather of Margaret (Lea) Houston, wife of Gen. Sam Houston, governor of Texas. This is in accord with a tradition held by the descendants of James Madison Long of Texas. James Madison Long, grandson of Eunice Lea (sister of George Lea), moved to Texas around 1840 and there became a judge and one time mayor of Austin. There is a tradition in the Long family that they were kin to Margaret Lea who married Gen. Sam Houston. In fact, James M. Long was a second cousin of Margaret (Lea) Houston.

Georgia Journal, a newspaper published in Baldwin Co., GA (Milledgeville)- has in 1812 a list of persons whose tax was delinquent in 1812 in Hancock Co., GA, First Collection district, Third Division included George Lea (source page 181- of source below, and cited in an Issue of Dec. 2, 1812)

This George Lea is often confused with other George Leas in Caswell Co. This George Lea moved with his parents to NC around 1753 and lived for a time in Orange Co., NC, where George served in 1770 as an executor of the will of James Talbert and in 1781 as an executor of the will of Thomas McNeill. Thomas McNelill's son, John, married Georges's sister, Anness, and James Talbert was probably the brother of George's wife, Lucy.

After the Revolution when cheap land became available in Georgia, George Lea joined what was almost a stampede from the Corolinas into Georgia, and settled with his family in Wilkes Co. around 1784. He received several grants of land in Wilkes Co.
