William Henry was born on November 14th, 1840 in , Cannon, TN. William Henry's father was Samuel P Gannon and his mother was Sussanah C Stacy. His paternal grandparents were George Gannon and Joanna Whitt; his maternal grandparents were William Stacy and Sarah HANES. He had six brothers and two sisters, named George Newton, John C., Harry Andrew, Benjamin F, Samuel Murphy, James Perry, Joanna Rebecca and Sarah Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the nine children. ACCORDING TO HIS OWN STATEMENT IN HIS PENSION APPLICATION, HE WAS IN THE BATTLE AT MURFREESBORO AND VARIOUS CAVALRY SKIRMISHES AND WAS NEVER WOUNDED OR IN PRISON. ON 2 MAY 1863 HE WAS "CUT OFF FROM HIS COMMAND NEAR SUGAR TREE KNOB" AND DID NOT SERVE ANYMORE. HE WAS NEVER DISCHARGED. BOTH HE AND CAPT. H.A. WILEY WERE LISTED AMONG THOSE PRESENT IN WOODBURY FOR THE FOURTH TENNESSEE CONFEDERATE REUNION IN 1878, AT WHICH COL. BAXTER SMITH WAS A SPEAKER. THREE THOUSAND SEATS WERE MADE AVAILABLE FOR THE GALA; EVENTS INCLUDED A PARADE, A PICNIC DINNER, AND A BALL IN THE EVENING (The Woodbury Press, 19 SEP 1878). William enlisted as a Private in the 8th Cavalry (Smith's), Company E,Army of Tennessee, CSA, 10 Nov 1862 in Woodbury, Cannon Co., TN. He served in the battle of Murfreesboro and other skirmishes but was never wounded or captured. According to his pension application on 2 May 1863, he was cut off from his command near Sugar Tree Knob, Cannon Co. and did not serve any more. He was never discharged. He attended a Confederate Veterans reunion in Woodbury in 1878.
William became the guardian of his youngest siblings; James "Jim" Perry,Joanna R. and Sarah Elizabeth, upon his mothers death 8 Mar 1872. Jim married 12 Oct 1873. Joanna married 9 Nov 1873. Sarah married 29 Oct 1873. She had just turned 14. It would seem they were in a hurry to find space of their own.
William lived in Morrison, Warren Co., TN. Vervilla Cemetery is about 4 miles from Morrison. There is no marker for William's grave.
In 1880 census his occupation is farmer.
