George Newton was born in 1842 in , Cannon, TN. George Newton's father was Samuel P Gannon and his mother was Sussanah C Stacy. His paternal grandparents were George Gannon and Joanna Whitt; his maternal grandparents were William Stacy and Sarah HANES. He had six brothers and two sisters, named William Henry, John C., Harry Andrew, Benjamin F, Samuel Murphy, James Perry, Joanna Rebecca and Sarah Elizabeth. George died of smallpox.
George enlisted as a private in Smith's 8th Cavalry, Company G, Army of Mississippi, CSA, 27 Sep 1862, Bardstown, KY. He was probably captured and given the choice of prison or joining the Union Army. He joined the Union Army in May 1863.
