CENS
DATE 1840
PLAC Carroll Co., Tenn.Son of Elias Butler, he was one major administrator of his father's estate. In 1833 he sold a slave named winny and the following year a slave named Vicey and her two children
for $600 (Carroll County Deed Book C, pp 92, 144). He apparently used the money, in 1834, when he bought land from Henry Smith on Maples Creek near Sandy River and built a watermill which he ran
for many years. In 1840 he was appointed Justice of the Peace for the 14th District of Carroll County, and served until 1843. He kept no slaves in the years immediately before the Civil Ware and
his sons fought for the North. He was in charge of building the wooden bridge across the Sandy River and Garrettsburg and died without finishing the job. (Source Robert Allen webpage)
