Note: Different sources list John as a son of either wife. However, he is listed first of the living sons in his father's will. Assuming that they were listed in birth order (not necessarily so), John is a son of Mary Butler, and older than Jacob, putting his birth abt 1665 ? Also he was baptised at his Grandfather, Richard Butler's request on May 14, 1676. (This church did NOT baptise infants, only those having reached the age of reason and declaring their faith so the baptism does not indicate a birth date.) See notes under his mother, Mary (Butler) Washburn. Final settlement of the CT estate of Mary Butler Washburn Hicks (property inherited from her father, Richard Butler) absolutely proves John's parentage. I have seen estimates of the marriage date as both 1701 and 1711

To my well-beloved wife Elinor Hicks all my moveable Estate Goods and Chattels and debts, dues, duties and demands whatsoever belonging to me * * *
To my well-beloved wife Elinor Hicks my now dwelling house and all my lands and meadows for her use until my youngest son Thomas Hicks arrives to ye full age of twenty and one, for and towards the education and bringing up of my children, but no longer.
Unto my four sons, Robert Hicks, Ellis Hicks, William Hicks, and Thomas Hicks, all my dwelling house, lands and meadows to immediately be sold after my son Thomas Hicks reaches age twenty one, and (the proceeds) divided into four equal parts between my sons, share and share, alike.
Appointed as executors; my well-beloved wife, Elinor Hicks, my loving brother -in-law Thomas Ellison, and my well-beloved brother Isaac Hicks,* and my well-loved friends John Tallman and Benjamin Thorne. Witnesses: Samuel Stringham, William Van Wyck; Humphrey.

There is supposition that some or all of these sons of John & Elinor moved to North Carolina. While there is nothing in this will to prove that, the conversion of the estate to cash would be consistent with the concept that at least some of the sons have moved away and noone is interested in retaining the land.
