Sir Humphrey Gilbert 
Sir Humphrey was born about 1539 in Greenway, Devon.1 Sir Humphrey's father was Otho Gilbert and his mother was Katherine Champernowne. His maternal grandparents were Sir Philip Champernowne and Catherine Carew. He had three brothers and a sister, named Sir John, Otho, Adrian and Katherine. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Sir Walter, Margaret and Sir Carew of Fardell. He died on September 9th, 1583 in At sea, returning from Newfoundland.1 General Notes

The half brother of Sir Walter Raleigh, Sir Humphrey Gilbert was involved as an organizer and financier in the colonization of North America. He influenced Sir Walter in his attempt to found a colony at <a href="http://www.nps.gov/fora/gilbert.htm">Roanoke Virginia</a>.
In 1583, Sir Humphrey claimed the island of <a href="http://www.bb.com/looptestl ive.cfm?bookid=781&startrow=2">Newfoundland</a> for the British Crown. His ship, the Squirrel, was lost at sea on the return voyage to England.
