Henry was born in 1172 in Clare,Suffolk,England. Henry's father was Roger "The Good" de Clare and his mother was Maud (Matilda) De Saint Hillary. His paternal grandparents were Richard FitzGilbert De Clare and Adeliz de Keveliock; his maternal grandparents were James Du Harcourt De Saint Hilary and Aveline Ales Canamor of Scotland. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Roger, James, John, Elena, Mabel FitzPatrick and Eveline (Aveline). He was the youngest of the eight children.
