William Cain was born on June 17th, 1852 in Pike Co., AL.1 William Cain's father was William Edward Smart and his mother was Avis Driggers. His paternal grandparents were Cornelious Smart and Temperance Rushing; his maternal grandparents were Bennet Driggers and Charity Philpot. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Isaac, Charles Henry, John Wesley, Melinda Amanda, Jane, Eliza, Charity Leviney and Temperance Elizabeth. He was the third youngest of the nine children.
