Her paternal grandparents were Cornelious Smart and Temperance Rushing; her maternal grandparents were Bennet Driggers and Charity Philpot. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Isaac, Charles Henry, John Wesley, William Cain, Jane, Eliza, Charity Leviney and Temperance Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the nine children.
