Her paternal grandparents were Stephen McDonald Rushing and Martha Sylvester Edwards. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named Grover McDonald, Willie Rayford, Jacob Herman, James Ezra, Homer Eugene, Calvin Cleveland, Living, Bertha Mae and Nellie Voncile.
