John Dawson Castellaw 
John Dawson was born in 1780 in Bertie Co., NC.1 John Dawson's father was John Castellaw and his mother was Margaret Dawson. His paternal grandparents were James, Sr. Castellaw and Sarah Williams. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Bartholomew, Henry Dawson, John William, Thomas Jefferson, Charlotte, Nancy W. and Harriet. He was the third oldest of the eight children. He had three half-brothers and five half-sisters, named William, John, James C., Elizabeth, Prudence, Martha, Sarah and Penelope. He died at the age of 79 on February 15th, 1859 in Haywood Co., TN.1 General Notes

John D. and his brother Henry D. sold two hundred acres to Starkey and
Larry Castellow on the 20th of November 1819 in Bertie Co., NC: Bertie
County Deed Book Z, page 97. John D. had bought the land at a Sheriff's
sale on the 10th day of December, 1808.
John and Zilphia moved to Haywood Co., TN in 1834. John was the wagon
master of the wangon train that took the family from North Carolina to
TN. He was a blacksmith. John's will was written in 1853. The estate was
probated in March 1859 (E-104).
Note: Prior to 1872 Haywood Co., TN was a larger county. Crockett County
was formed in 1872 from parts of Dyer, Gibson, Haywood and Madison
counties. Thus, at times one will find the records or cemetery listing in
Crockett Co., TN. For example, Castellaw Cemetery was once in Haywood
Co., TN but is now located in Crockett Co., TN. Hence, there could be
understandable errors in some records pertaining to the Castellaw(s) in
TN.
In the 1830's wagonmaster John Dawson Castellow (various spellings) led
Bertie Countians west in wagontrains. Most parties ended up in Tennessee
or Illinois. As soon as he settled one group he would return to North
Carolina for another.
John Dawson Castellaw left Capeharts Baptist Church here in Bertie
Country, NC in 1834, do any of you TN researchers know where he is
buried? The following came from our Church records "Charter member and a

John Dawson and Zilpha were married in a religious ceremony on January 21st, 1804 in Tyrell Co., NC.1 They had two sons and two daughters, named Thomas Jefferson, Son, Harriet W. and Daughter.

Harriet W. was born on December 9th, 1804 in Washington, Beaufort Co., NC.1 She died at the age of 64 on November 11th, 1869 in Haywood Co., TN.1
Thomas Jefferson Castellaw
Thomas Jefferson was born on September 15th, 1808 in Bertie Co., NC.1 He died at the age of 70 on December 23rd, 1878 in Haywood Co., TN.1
