Mary J was born in 1840.1 Mary J's father was Pleasant Halbert and her mother was Nancy Crawford. Her paternal grandparents were James Halbert and Elizabeth Smith; her maternal grandparents were John Crawford and Margaret Buchanan. She had four brothers and three sisters, named James C, John T, Pleasant W, William C, Martha A, Margaret C and Emily Naomi. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
