Samuel was born in 1766 in Augusta, Virginia.1   Samuel's father was Andrew Buchanan and his mother was Johanna Hays.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Buchanan and Martha McNutt. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Matthew, David, John, Joseph, Isabella, Martha, Mary, Jane, Margaret, Hannah and Eleanor.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 21 in 1787 in Davidson County, Tennessee.1
