Mary was born in 1770 in Augusta, Virginia.1   Mary's father was Andrew Buchanan and her mother was Johanna Hays.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Buchanan and Martha McNutt. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Matthew, David, Samuel, John, Joseph, Isabella, Martha, Jane, Margaret, Hannah and Eleanor.  She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.  She died at the age of 62 in 1832 in Liberty Hall, Washington County, Virginia.1
