Jane was born in 1772 in Augusta, Virginia.1   Jane's father was Andrew Buchanan and her mother was Johanna Hays.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Buchanan and Martha McNutt. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Matthew, David, Samuel, John, Joseph, Isabella, Martha, Mary, Margaret, Hannah and Eleanor.  She was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.
