John was born on March 6th, 1775 in Washington, Virginia.1   John's father was Andrew Buchanan and his mother was Johanna Hays.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Buchanan and Martha McNutt. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Matthew, David, Samuel, Joseph, Isabella, Martha, Mary, Jane, Margaret, Hannah and Eleanor.  He was the fifth youngest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 45 in 1820 in Williamson County, Tennessee.1
