Joseph was born on August 14th, 1785 in Washington, Virginia.1   Joseph's father was Andrew Buchanan and his mother was Johanna Hays.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Buchanan and Martha McNutt. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Matthew, David, Samuel, John, Isabella, Martha, Mary, Jane, Margaret, Hannah and Eleanor.  He was the youngest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 44 on September 18th, 1829 in Kentucky.1
