Matthew was born in 1762 in Augusta, Virginia.1   Matthew's father was Andrew Buchanan and his mother was Johanna Hays.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Buchanan and Martha McNutt. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named David, Samuel, John, Joseph, Isabella, Martha, Mary, Jane, Margaret, Hannah and Eleanor.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 69 in 1831 in Washington, Virginia.1
