Martha was born in 1796.1   Martha's father was Matthew Buchanan and her mother was Elizabeth Edmiston.  Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Buchanan and Johanna Hays; her maternal grandparents were William Edmiston and Agnes Holmes. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Andrew, William, Samuel, Nancy, Joanna, Jannet, Isabella, Margaret and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
