His paternal grandparents were Thomas Buchanan and Jane Neeley; his maternal grandparents were John Crawford and Margaret Buchanan. He had six brothers and a sister, named Andrew Hay, William H, Pleasant W, John Thomas, James G, Cyrus and Cyrene Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the eight children.General Notes
