Ella Edwina was born on April 16th, 1854 in Trimble County, Kentucky. Ella Edwina's father was John Ferguson Butler and her mother was Frances Jane Farley. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Farley Butler and Nancy Walden; her maternal grandparents were Forest Farley and Frances Ellington. She had three brothers and eight sisters, named William , Joseph Forest, John Breckinridge, Mary Elizabeth, Mary Frances, Martha Reeves, Nancy Ann, Eunitia Ann, Elizabeth Wright, Sophia White and Edmonia Isabel. She was the third youngest of the twelve children.-
