Henry III of England 
Henry III was born on October 1st, 1207 in Winchester Castle, England.1 Henry III's father was John "Lackland" of England and his mother was Isabelle of Angoulme. His paternal grandparents were Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine; his maternal grandparents were Aymer de Taillefer Valence and Alice De COURTENAY. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Hugh XI and Alice. He died at the age of 65 on November 16th, 1272 in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England. HENRY III OF ENGLAND [of Winchester], King of England, son and h eir, was born at Winchester Castle on 1 Oct. 1207. He was crowne d, aged nine, at Gloucester on 28 Oct. 1216. Henry assumed perso nal rule when he declared himself to be of full age in January 1 227, and sought to recover the lands in France lost by his fathe r. He was married at Canterbury on 14 Jan. 1236 to ELEONORE DE P ROVENCE, second daughter and co-heiress of Raymond Berengar V, C omte de Provence (descendant of Charlemagne), by Beatrix, daught er of Thomas I, Comte de Savoie (descendant of Charlemagne) . Sh e was born at Aix-en-Provence in 1217. Their children were bor n at Westminster in 1239, at Windsor Castle in 1240, at Bordeau x in 1242, in London in 1245 and at Westminster in 1253. Henry' s personal rule in the direction of royal finances without the p articipation of the barons provoked discontent. The barons wer e further repelled by the influence over his government by his Q ueen's Savoyard kinsmen. His Lusignan half-brothers involved hi m in a disastrous foray in France. Henry's need for financial su pport compelled him in 1258 to agree to the creation of a priv y council of barons to advise him and to oversee the administrat ion of government. Henry sought help from the French king, Loui s IX, and in 1259 made peace abandoning claims to the lost land s in France (the titles of Duc de Normandie and Comte d'Anjou i n 1259, also renouncing claims to the counties of Maine, Tourain e, and Poitou) and agreeing to hold the province still in his ha nds, the Duchy of Gascony, as a feudal vassal of Louis and his s uccessors. His major baronial opponent by 1264 was his brother-i n-law Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester. In the ensuing civi l war Montfort captured Henry and his eldest son, Edward, at th e battle of Lewes in Sussex on 14 May 1264. Montfort ruled Engla nd in Henry's name until he was defeated and killed at the battl e of Evesham on 4 Aug. 1265 by Henry's son, the future King Edwa rd I who assumed effective control of the government. HENRY II I OF ENGLAND, King of England, died at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk , on 16 Nov. 1272, and was buried at Westminster Abbey. His wido w died at Amesbury, co. Wilts, on 24 June 1291.
