Virginia Overton was born after 1850. Virginia Overton's father was Meredith Bluford Mahanes and her mother was Elizabeth W. Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Lewis Augusta Mahanes and Drucilla Brockman. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Edward Preston, Edwin, William Preston, Meredith Marshall, Martha W., Mary, Victoria, Claudia N., Emily M., Pattie and Elizabeth Cowles. She was the third youngest of the twelve children.-
