Meredith Marshall was born in January 1850. Meredith Marshall's father was Meredith Bluford Mahanes and his mother was Elizabeth W. Smith. His paternal grandparents were Lewis Augusta Mahanes and Drucilla Brockman. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Edward Preston, Edwin, William Preston, Martha W., Mary, Victoria, Claudia N., Emily M., Pattie, Virginia Overton and Elizabeth Cowles. He was the second youngest of the twelve children.-
