Elizabeth Cowles was born in January 1852. Elizabeth Cowles' father was Meredith Bluford Mahanes and her mother was Elizabeth W. Smith. Her paternal grandparents were Lewis Augusta Mahanes and Drucilla Brockman. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Edward Preston, Edwin, William Preston, Meredith Marshall, Martha W., Mary, Victoria, Claudia N., Emily M., Pattie and Virginia Overton. She was the youngest of the twelve children.-
