Laura was born in 1800.  Laura's father was Richard Forrester and her mother was Elizabeth (Lizzie) Cotham.  Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Cotham and Elizabeth Griffin. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Hezekiah, Josiah, Silas, Jeremiah, Arthur, Richard, Dinah, Lucinda and Sarah Virginia.  She was the third oldest of the ten children.
