John was born on February 12th, 1877 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.1   John's father was John Mathieson and his mother was Sarah Bliss.  His paternal grandfather is John Matheson and his paternal grandmother was Mary McKinney; his maternal grandparents are Thomas Bliss and Jessie Sim. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas Archibald, Frank, William James, George McGregor, Jessie, Mary and Helen.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 78 in October 1955 in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia.
