John was born in 1849 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  John's father is John Matheson and his mother was Mary McKinney.  His maternal grandparents are Archibald McKinney and Alice. He had two sisters named Catherine and Mary Ann.  He died at the age of 71 on February 9th, 1920 in Bundaberg, Queensland, Australia.
