Melissa, known as Melissa, was born in 1819 in Muscogee Co, Georgia.  Melissa's father was Wiley CANNON and her mother was Charlotte SHEPPARD.  Her paternal grandparents were Nathaniel CANNON and Frances SUMNER. She had nine brothers and two sisters, named James, Lemuel, Wherry Or Whorry, Lewis, John, Elbert, David, Jessie, Robert, Zilpha and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the twelve children.
