James, known as James, was born in 1825 in Muscogee Co, Georgia.  James' father was Wiley CANNON and his mother was Charlotte SHEPPARD.  His paternal grandparents were Nathaniel CANNON and Frances SUMNER. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Lemuel, Wherry Or Whorry, Lewis, John, Elbert, David, Jessie, Robert, Melissa, Zilpha and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
