Asquith was born on December 1st, 1858 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.¹ Asquith's father was John Thornton and his mother was Mary Mitchell. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Thornton and Harriet Asquith; his maternal grandparents were John Mitchell and Sarah (Mitchell). He had three brothers and five sisters, named Fred Mitchell, Andrew, Thomas, Harriet A, Grace, Sarah Jane, Emma and Maria. He was the third oldest of the nine children.
