Andrew was born in September 1871 in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.1   Andrew's father was John Thornton and his mother was Mary Mitchell.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Thornton and Harriet Asquith; his maternal grandparents were John Mitchell and Sarah (Mitchell).  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Asquith, Fred Mitchell, Thomas, Harriet A, Grace, Sarah Jane, Emma and Maria.  He was the eighth oldest of the nine children.
