John was born on December 1st, 1837 in Morton, Bingley, Yorkshire, England.1   John's father was Thomas Thornton and his mother was Harriet Asquith.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Samuel, William, Thomas, Sarah, Elizabeth, Nancy, Hannah and Ann.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died in Keighley, Yorkshire, England.
