William was born in 1821 in Morton Banks, Yorkshire, England.1   William's father was Thomas Thornton and his mother was Harriet Asquith.  He had three brothers and five sisters, named Samuel, Thomas, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, Nancy, Hannah and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 78 on March 1st, 1899.
