3rd earl Palatine of Chester. An original charter in the Cottonian collection dated at Devizes in 1152 by Henry, Duke of Normandy and Count of Anjou, grants to Ranulph de Gernon, earl of Chester. This earl was son of Ranulph le Meschine by a marriage to Lucia Talillebois. [Falaise Roll, p. 156]

In the list of tenants in Lincolnshire prior to 1120, the date that Ranulph le Meschin succeeded to the earldom of Chester after the death of his first cousin Richard, earl of Chester, who perished in the shipwreck of the BLANCHE NEF, which is the only reference to his being earl of Lincoln. The view from Caergwrle Castle (Flintshire) spectacularly indicates its strategic importance as a military site, commanding views towards Shropshire, the Mersey and across to Chester and to the Cheshire Plain, which is dramatically interrupted by the gigantic outcrop of Beeston, crowned by the elaborate 13th century defences of Ranulf, earl of Chester. Henry I gave to Ranulph de Meschines, whom some believe to have accompanied William the Conqueror from Normandy, the Earldom of Carlisle. However, his name is absent from the various lists of the Conqueror's companions.
   Out of his immense grant, which probably included the whole of Cumberland, Ranulph conveyed to his brother William de Meschyn, whose seat was later to be at Egremont Castle, that portion of land lying between the Derwent and the Duddon, then called the Barony of Copeland. Ranulph le Meschin probably began building Appleby Castle around 1100, passing it to the Crown when le Meschine was made Earl of Chester in 1121.
