!Harllowen de Burg, founder of the Abbey of Grestein in Normandy, died, vit. pat., having married Arlotta, mother of William the Conqueror, by whom he left two sons, both of whom were wth their half-brother at the battle of Hastings. [The Bruces and the Cumyns, p. 391]
Conteville in the arrondissement of Pont-Audemer-sur-Risle, department of the Eure, Normandy, was from ancient times the property of the dukes of Normandy and was only given to Herluin de Conteville, the husband of Arlette, mother of the Conqueror, for life. After his death it was probably possessed by Arlette, or if not, it doubtless reverted to the duchy. In any event, William Malet II, son of William Malet I, gave in 1121 the "manor of Conteville with the church and with all the dependencies of the church and of the manor" to the abbey of Bec. [Falaise Roll, p. 128]
